Moms and Pops,

So, I imagine that you've been waiting anxiously for this day... Well, as I'm sure you have guessed (and as I have said in the past) I am being transferred. I am moving out of the rural wilderness areas, and I am going to Vacaville 1st Ward. Vacaville is simliar to Fairfield, just a tad smaller I think. It's in the foothills and it's a decently sized city. But, it's considered "Zion" in our mission because it has 5 wards there... Crazy, huh? My new WML was a stake president in Vacaville for the past 10 years and before that he was a counselor in the stake presidency... It's the only "functioning" stake in the mission, meaning that everything actually works how it's supposed to. We have 17 ward missionaries in that ward that are all active and all have a specific assignement... I'm excited! My new companion will be Elder Rumesh Ramiah, and guess what? He's NOT white!!! He is actually from Sri Lanka! How crazy is that? He's only been out maybe 8 months or so, but I'm stoked to be with him. From what I've heard he is just awesome, and that you can't help but love him. I will be a district leader again as well. From what I've found out, my district is pretty sweet! So, needless to say, I am very excited. We are transferring tomorrow, so I'm still in Fortuna right now. It's bitter sweet, I love this area and the beautiful scenery. But, at the same time, I'm ready to get to a normal area after being in the boondocks for the past 8 months or so. It's crazy to think that after Vacaville, I'll only have 1 more area probably... Nuts! When I talked to Pres, he was telling me a bit about Vacaville, and about my new WML... he said that President Bell (my wml) called him and asked him to send down one of the most obedient and hard working missionaries that he has to offer... I thought that that was a bit much, and I can think of other missionaries that are "better" than me in those aspects... but, I know that this is what I have been called to do. The Lord calls us in our weaknesses but He qualifies us for His work, right?

Anyway, Saturday and Sunday was AWESOME! We finished this week off (for me I finished my time off in Fortuna) with 2 baptisms!!! Doug and Jolene... Doug's story is incredible, I think I told you, if not then tell me. But, Doug's dad who is 89 years old baptized both Doug and Jolene... Not only is he 89, but he can't walk or stand on his own, you know what that meant? Yup, Elder Christensen and I dressed up to get in the font to help out Don (Doug's dad) baptize his son and Jolene. I held Don up, while Christensen helped dunk them... It took 2 times to baptize both. We did Jolene first, and Don just couldn't get her full name right (he has TERRIBLE hearing) so he said the prayer like 4 or 5 times before he even dunked her once. When he dunked her, her knee came out... so we did it again and it was gravy. Then Doug... Doug is a really big fella, probably 6'1" and around 250 or 260 lbs. His first time under, his ring and pinky finger stuck out... So we did him again; I held Don up and Christensen just slammed Doug into the water so far that he hit the bottom so that he was completely immersed haha. There was a big splash and waves everywhere. It was like an orca show, all the kids up front watching got splashed a little bit. It was hilarious. Christensen didn't mean to do it that hard, so he turned all red and got embarrassed, but it was hilarious. It's a special story though about Don and his family. Don used to be inactive, but because he decided to be active again, he baptized his wife (this was years ago) and now he baptized his son, and his son's gf (future wife), and now Doug is sharing the gospel with everyone and so is Jolene. We just picked up Jolene's son and he'll get baptized within the coming months as well, if he can stop smoking weed... It's just incredible how God blesses us with miracles... and even more how the Atonement can change who we are, it can literally change our behavior and our character... it's tough (as i'm sure we all know) but it is possible.

 

Other than that, it's been a great week. Good weather, for the most part. It's been raining a TON lately. But, in Vacaville, it's supposed to be hot with no wind... awesome. How is it that I always get sent to the super hot places when the summer rolls around? There is only a few places hotter than Vacaville. But, I'll be in a car, so that'll be nice.

I've been keeping up a bit with the tourny... people keep me updated. OSU should be able to go all the way, but they have a small tendancy of choking... hopefully this doesn't happen. Is Sullinger planning on going to the NBA after this year? I hope not, with all the trouble that they've been having. Keep him for another year so I can watch him play some more. I miss lacrosse... a lot, I wanna watch it!

Tanner looked SUPER thin! Wow... it blew my mind.

Well, that's about it for me. I hope you guys are enjoying your weather and your time in St. Louis! The day that I come home is coming faster and faster, it's blowing my mind... I only have 6 transfers left, that really blows my mind. I have friends in the mission, that are just 2 transfers ahead of me, and they only have 4 transfers left! Holy cow! Elder Gardner goes home May 17th... HOLY COW!!!!!! Really, this is all blowing my mind very much... Anyway, I'll not suffer you to listen to my mind explode. I love you both so so much! Thank you for your great examples! Congrats on the temple ordinance worker mom! You'll love it! I'm really excited to attend the temple with you both when I come home!

Another Week, Another E-Mail

Moms and Pops,

Well, it's good to see that ya'll had a great week!! I'm jealous you got to hear from Elder Bednar... but again, we got Elder Perry, so it evens out. Our week has been busy, it seems like the past few weeks have just been a blur because we've been traveling so much. We've been so busy! We haven't hardly worked in our area lately because we've been either at Zone Conference (last Tuesday), on exchanges, and visiting with every companionship (7) and doing a 3 hour training with them. That's what we've done this last week... crazy. On Monday night, we drove down to Ukiah to stay the night because we have Zone Conference the next day. Holy cow was President fired up. He's going home in a few months and he is tryin to whip people into shape. He was yelling and goin nuts! Not really too nuts... he was just furious about all the immaturity and laziness. I was sitting in the 2nd row, right in front of him, and he was so mad that he was shaking. He called us all to repentance... It was much needed I think for the mission. He just said if you aren't here to work then go home. Simple as that. So, that was good to hear haha, luckily I'm here to work!

So this is the last week of the transfer, goes by so fast! I'm pretty positive that I'm going to be moved. I don't know where to or what I'll be doing, but I think I'm going to move. I've been here since the end of November, that was like 4 months ago! I've been out in the middle of nowhere for the past 8 months, I'm ready to be in a city or something. It's going to be a big change for me though if that happens. I'm used to being far away and off by myself with my companion, so it'll be interesting to see the change that comes. But, with these areas in the middle of no where, we get the beautiful scenery! Also we get the crazies... But this coming weekend we will be having 2 baptisms! A great way to end a transfer I believe. I'm excited. Although, this week will be interesting because we're going to be able to spend multiple days in our own area! That doesn't happen too often... We aren't really sure what we're going to do because we aren't used to it. So, it should be good, we'll be doing some good finding.

I heard about BYU and their loss... That's a darn shame... BUT! I never expected them to get this far without Jimmer, so that's great that they made it as far as they did. Go Ohio teams!! That made me happy to hear. What's the newest news on Peyton?

No, I haven't bought any new pants or anything. We haven't left our area on P-day (we will today). We usually just do our necessities here in Fortuna, and then we've been going to a members house and playing a bit of pool. I miss pool, I'm not very good at it anymore... Uhmm... i don't think I have anything else to report on, or ask any questions...

Another Week, Another Baptism

Dear Parentals,

 

Well, as you see from the title, we had another baptism on Saturday!!! It was a guy named A. He is a bigger fella, not as in tall, but as in circumference. We had a little crisis because he couldn't fit into the biggest white jumper that I found in the men's bathroom, so we were all scrambling to figure out what to do, luckily, someone went into the women's room and found a bigger one (weird) that he could fit in. He had to be baptized forward instead of back because he walks with a cane and wasn't as stable. So, one of our members that is fellowshipping him baptized him and the first time A just leaned over and our member just tried to shove him underwater... it was a little humorous to me haha. Our member told him to bend his knees and then just go down. It worked a lot better the second time. I had the privelege to confirm him a member of the church yesterday, it was awesome! Al is so solid. We knocked on his door about 5 weeks ago, and we set up a time to see him the following week. He left us a note saying that he wasn't there. We lost track of him for another week (so now 2 weeks have gone by since we found him) and after visiting a LA member that lived across the street we felt as if we should knock on his door again to see if he's home. He was! Since that day, we've taught him about 2-3 times for the next 2 weeks. We had our first sit down lesson with him on a Saturday, and he came to church the next day and said he LOVED it. He said he felt right at home. He said he couldn't be baptized because he doesn't know enough but after we explained that he doesn't need to know every thing that he can be baptized, to which he responded, "how soon can I be baptized?" He was baptized just a week and a half later. He read every thing that we gave him, he's watched all the movies, he knows the Book of Mormon is true and that Joseph Smith is a prophet. When we talked about President Monson, we showed him President Monson's latest General Conference talk and after it was over, Al just sat there smiling and he said "I could listen to him all day." I love being a missionary!!

 

We have a few other awesome people on their way to the waters of baptism as well. We have a 14 year old girl that we're working with still, she is literally right on the cusp! The smallest little gust of wind would push her over into the water! She said she's going to pray about it (we taught her last night and said that she's ready to be baptized now). She does every thing that we invite her to do; read, pray, come to church (she lives with her grandparents and they're active members and her legal guardians). She even asks us to give her more reading to do! I love it. We got a referral last night from missionaries up in Arcata for a part-member family (the husband is a NM) here in Fortuna. We knocked on their door last night and the wife is a LA lady that is getting back to church and her husband is searching and is super nice and sincere. He said he'll read from the Book of Mormon with his wife and kids... He'll be baptized before too long as well. As you can see, good things are happening!

 

Oh, I'm not being transferred by the way. Me and Elder Christensen are staying together for another 6 weeks. He makes me run every day... but, I dropped a hole on my belt!

 

So dad, tell me, did mom hold it together when she spoke at ward conference? I'm glad I give you a lot to talk about moms, I hope you didn't embarrass me too much... well, I suppose it's okay, as long as they don't remember anything when I come home.

 

That experience that you had at the temple is awesome, pops! It's like the church is true or something? Weird. Me and Elder Christensen watched a video this morning for our study about temples, it's called Between Heaven and Earth. It's a sweet movie. I wish I could go to the temple more often... Only once a quarter isn't enough!!! I can only go to the temple 3 more times for the rest of my mission! That is weird... I also only have 7 transfers left. This is really trippin me out....

 

So this week, Elder Christensen and I have to teach all the WML's in the stake at the leadership meeting. Because we're zone leaders, the high councilman over missionary work thinks that we know what we're doing... just kidding! We're going to teach on how members and missionaries can work better together and be unified in the work. A lot of the members just say, "well we got missionaries to bring people into the church!" But, it's as much of a job for the members as it is for us... We are only part-time missionaries really, we don't get to stay in an area longer than 6 months. It's frustrating when a ward doesn't wanna work well with you. Like for Al's baptism, we had just a handful of people there after it was announced in church, and after I posted 3 or 4 reminders on the FB page for the ward, and after the worldwide leadership training broadcast we reminded the leaders and auxiliaries to stay (our baptism was just an hour after it was over)... but they didn't. It's extremely frustrating. Our bishop, WML, the person baptizing A, and A were all there though! So, that's a start. The bishop's wife was there, our WML's family was there and the 14 year old girl that we're teaching, her grandpa was there. That was about it... oh, and the sister missionaries from Eureka came with their investigator who is getting baptized soon was there. So, yeah... work with the missionaries there in Chesterfield!!!!!! At least feed them good food, and turn the tv off when they come over (it is AMAZINGLY distracting...).

 

Anywho, despite the lack of ward-ness (at a loss of words to describe it) I love this area and the little branch in Miranda. They have special permission to find and teach people down there, and they're working with a girl now. We're going to pick her up as an 'gator on Sunday when we go down there. We'll set a baptismal date, and it'll all be gravy!

 

I got your package, thank you! I enjoyed it, so did Elder Christensen. His birthday is tomorrow (on Valentines Day). His parents haven't sent him anything, but I'm glad that I got your package so I could share with him. He enjoys the cookies, as do I.

 

I don't think I have anything else... I'm glad that my blogs are being read a little bit... I hope that they are good and edifying! I'll be writing another one this week. On what? I'm not sure, I guess you'll have to find out.

My Tour of the Eureka Zone

Moms and Pops,

 

Well, it has been quite a hectic week for you both it sounds like! I bet Max's little adventure was a bit stressful. On Saturday we were walking around and this puppy German Shepherd was playing with another puppy in a yard, of course I went over and started talking to them.... I love little German Shepherd puppies! I'm glad that you upgraded to the iPhone, mom. How do you like it? Whatever happened to my phone? There are so many new little phones and electronic things out these days, I feel so lost... Dad, you'll have to catch me up when I get home on all these new gadgets. Oh! Well, first things first I suppose... My "favorite" scripture... At this point, I'm not sure if I can choose one! Uhhh... I like a lot of them... I'll choose Philippians 3:13-14. I really do love that one though.

 

So, about my "tour." We went on 2 exchanges this week, back-to-back. We went up to McKinleyville on Tuesday for District Meeting and right after that we went on an exchange with the Eureka 2nd Ward elders. I went to Eureka with Elder McQueen (we were in the same district in Farfield for 2 transfers and have been on exchanges before). It was so cool to see how he has grown in the past 6 months. In Fairfield, he was just a greenie, now he's solid! It was good. Elder Carter took the car keys with him down to Fortuna so we were without wheels. We could have biked, but we decided to just walk. We walked all day Tuesday and all day Wednesday until we ended that exchange up in McKinleyville (President came up for interviews to the stake center) at 7:00pm. There are SO many crazies in Eureka. I've never seen so many homeless people in my life either. It's a pretty similar "weird" to Clearlake. We talked to a lady that called us over to "preach" to her. We got over to her and she was for sure on some kind of drug, meth I think. She gave us a "gypsie blessing," which involves her holding the back of her hand out to us and saying, "meditate" and then turning her hand and saying, "be blessed." That was a pretty weird experience.... She kept trying to get us to sit down too... Another guy came out of the house to talk with us, he was on something too. He talked to us about watching the big battleships go by, and how about he wasn't sure if they were Swedish or American. The whole time this man was talking to us, this lady kept saying that we were cute, handsome, that she liked our haircuts, she liked our suits, and she liked our ears. She said something about a cat and started making cat noises... When we finally left, after she gave McQueen a little bag of Taco Bell donut holes (did you know Taco Bell had those?), we just were dumbfounded at how crazy that experience was. It was nuts. Whew, people are weird! But, then again, drugs will do that. Then on Wednesday, we went up to McKinleyville for our interviews, I went last out of everyone. Since I barely just had an interview with Pres, it was pretty short. We didn't really talk about anything important, just chatted for a few minutes and I reported on my exchange with Elder McQueen, then we left. Right after that interview, we then started our exchange with the McKinleyville elders. I stayed up in McKinleyville with Elder Ellsworth (it can be a tongue-twister saying "Edwards" and "Ellsworth" together). Elder Ellsworth has been out not even 3 months yet, he's from Payson, UT. He is such a good kid, I like him a lot. He's a huge snowboarder and skateboarder, and we talked about the stereotype about "sk8ers." He doesn't fit that profile at all (obviously, since he's on a mission). We taught a crazy old guy that loves to talk. He has a bunch of 'stories" that he claims to be real, but I'm not too sure. He said he used to own a bunch of restaurants down in the bay area, and how Richard Nixon kept trying to come and eat at his restaurants and how he wouldn't let him come. Interesting guy. He was a football player back in the day too. He played against Woody Hayes team at OSU. He said that Woody would do anything to win. Funny old man. I finally got back to Fortuna on Friday morning... It was a long time spent away from my area. Although I didn't go up to Crescent City (not yet, that's next week!), or Arcata, I still consider it a "tour." It was good fun. It was good to be back with Elder Christensen. Things are going good.

 

So, Jeff, he should be getting baptized on Saturday. He's been interviewed (again) and he isn't smoking, so let's hope it goes through this time! Both Elder Christensen and myself will be in the font to baptize him since he can't stand or walk on his own. It should be pretty interesting. We're still working with our 14 year-old... She's coming along though! We also just picked up another SOLID 'gator on Saturday. We went to see a LA member and he pulled in right as we did, so timing was perfect. We planned on seeing him about 30 minutes earlier, but we got held up, so the Lord was holding us up so that we could have this experience. We had our lesson with Kalani, and it was a very spiritual lesson. Kalani said that we would come to church the next day for sure. We left and felt prompted by the Spirit, after we prayed thanking Heavenly Father for the great lesson, to go and try this guy named Al. We found him at home, with his BoM in hand and the pamphlet saying that he wanted to meet with us! But, his place was really messy and he didn't want to meet there, so we thought about Kalani! We went over and asked if it was alright to bring Al over and teach him, and it was all gravy. So, we brought Al over to Kalani's trailer and taught him about the Restoration. Al read what we gave him when we found him 3 weeks ago, it was great! We got Kalani to bring Al to church yesterday, which was awesome! Hopefully this will help Kalani be active by fellowshipping Al. We invited Al to be baptized and he said he wants to learn more, and then I extended a baptismal date for him to work for and he said "yes!" His date is for February 25th right now. It was awesome! We left that lesson and knocked on a potential 'gator's door and we picked her up as a 'gator too! Just a great day! We went over to see my favorite family, the Scotts for dinner. Sister Scott is recovering from a severe case of pneumonia that almost killed her; they caught it right as her lung was being filled with fluid and pus and gross stuff. She's doing well.

 

I have started trying to invite people to be baptized every day. It's awesome! That is what I am called to do, ya know? I've invited a ton of people to be baptized, of course most of them say no, but there is a spirit in inviting someone to come unto Christ. It's starting to be apart of my normal missionary work! It's great. I've definitely developed the skill of bein bold in inviting people to do things and especially be baptized.

Mom and Dad,

 

I feel like I just barely wrote you both... It's been a crazy week. We've had 2 exchanges this week, one with the assistants, and one with some missionaries in our zone. I went down to Sebastapol Tuesday night and came back Thursday morning on my exchange with the AP's. I went with Elder McBride. He was my zone leader in Fairfield, and he was my ZL here in Eureka for a few weeks, so I already knew him and we're friends. It was a really fun exchange, I loved it! Elder Gardner came up here with Elder Christensen, and got to sleep in my bed. He left me a not on my pillow that said, "I love you Effort." Effort was the nickname that I somehow got while in Clearlake. It was awesome... Then, after a day and a half of being back with Elder Christensen, we went on another exchange with our DL. He came down with me in Fortuna and Elder Christensen went up to Arcata. It was another great exchange. We did a lot of biking. We talked to a bunch of atheists that day... more than usual. Lots of interesting things happened... we gave a blessing to a member (Bro. Scott, he's one of my favorite people ever) because his wife (Sis. Scott is our mission mom in Fortuna) is deathly ill... There is no exaggeration with that description either. One of her lungs is full of pus and fluid, she's coughing blood, and it's just all a big mess. They didn't know what to do with here at the hospital here, so they flew her to the hospital in Redding. She's stable now and recovering very slowly. She's being pumped full of antibiotics. We had a lady yell at us because she couldn't get out of her recliner. She kept yelling at us to wait... whatever we said to her, she'd just yell back to wait. She eventually opened the door on the ground... apparently she couldn't get the recliner to go regular so she could get up, so she slid off on her butt and slid to the door... it was weird. That was a weird day.

 

Up here, we're having progress with our 14 year old investigator. Have I told you about her? She lives with her grandparents (they're active members) because something happened that I'm not sure of. We don't have a reason to know. But, she is now reading and praying on her own, she asks her grandparents questions and everything. She wants to learn. It's incredible. She will be baptized soon... not sure how soon, but soon. The rest of our new 'gators are pretty weak sauce... Although, one of them actually calls us to reschedule, so that's promising.

 

I saw that the Super Bowl would be the Giants and the Pats... a rematch of that CRAZY game in like 2007 or something... I REALLY hope that Eli does work once again... I hate the Pats... It should be a really good game... this will be the last Super Bowl that I'll have to miss on my mission! Woo!!!! I can't wait to start watching football again...... But, it can wait.

 

We had Stake Conference this week in Eureka. It was great, we went to the Saturday night session and the Sunday one (of course). Saturday night, we had some members take us out to Applebees for dinner up in Eureka. We sat in a booth in the corner, me and my companion at the time (Elder Clark) were facing the wall so we couldn't see the ESPN that was playing... luckily, or I would have been zone in on that. Guess who walks into Applebees? Sister Bunker... She walks in and I saw her and we waved and whatnot. I forgot that President and Sister Bunker go to all the Stake Conferences. President Bunker walked in shortly after and gave us a smile and a wave... I was so grateful that I was being obedient haha! He didn't catch me staring at a tv or anything... it was awesome. I still felt super nervous for some reason... Not sure why. After we were done eating, we went to say hi and he had us sit down with him and Sister Bunker and we just chatted for a bit. It was lovely. I love that man, he is an inspiration to me. Do ya'll have a picture of me with him and Sister Bunker? I'm going to be really sad when he leaves in July. That's right around the corner! Holy cow! Time flies.......

Parental units,

 

So, I'd like to start off addressing mom's statement about me not ever talking about me being tired. That statement is FALSE. I just don't ever say anything about it because it's not going to make me un-tired. I am exhausted every second of every day... I am working out pretty good though. Elder Christensen makes me get up and run, although when I was on exchanges I still got up and ran without him here. We've been running about a mile and 1/4 a day. It's not fast by any means. I started out going a really short distance, and now we're going longer and longer. We also have a set of 30 lb dumbbells in our bathroom, so whenever we go in we'll do a set of curls or something. So, I am exercising really good. I am getting up on time, and I go to bed at the first chance I get. We're supposed to be in bed by 10:30, but if we're done planning and I don't have anything to do, I'll just go to bed, even if it's 9:40.

 

I'm glad that the Pack lost, especially to the Giants. If it ends up the Giants and the Patriots again, boy, that'll be a good game. Next year, the Browns will be in the Super Bowl, mark my words!

 

 An "LA" member is a Less-Active member. They don't want us to call them inactive anymore...

 

Isn't 3rd Nephi the greatest!? I'm back in Alma right now. I just finished reading about Aaron teaching the king of the Lamanites. Such an amazing story! I love it. I am also almost finished with the New Testament! WOO! My first time haha I don't think I'll be reading the Old Testament while I'm on my mission... too gnarly.

 

There is wood that needs splitting? Well, count me in! I got 4 blisters from doing it last week... They're still not fully healed. I've decided that I'm a manly man, but I'm also a little girl at the same time. I look and act tough, but I have really sensitive skin... I can't handle hot things and I get blisters easy. I've been meaning to send my card... I'll do it at some point hopefully...

 

So me and the companion are doing really good actually. He was and is a tough cookie to figure out. He'll be all goofy and joking one second, and the next he'll be super quiet. We've had some good talks. He definitely is a "go-getter" though. He worries that people look at him and think that he's "fake." He isn't, he really is THAT driven. It is nice for me, it pushed me to do better. We've had a great week too. We picked up 9 new investigators (that's a lot!) and taught 18 lessons. Things are moving forward in this area.

 

I love Lehi's dream... that's what my last blog was about! If you haven't read it, DO IT! I taught Gospel Principles yesterday. I taught it with about an hours notice. Our WML (he's awesome) told me a few weeks ago, but I forgot of course. So, I taught about the gathering of Israel. It's so cool how it is happening now, all over the world; both physically and spiritually. It's sweet! I love having the skill to teach at a moments notice for about 45 minutes, it's nice.

 

The weather here has been beautiful! It has been sunny and around the upper 50s in the afternoon. In the morning (when we wake up) it's in the low 30's. It's supposed to rain all the time up here, but it hasn't hardly rained at all in the past 2 months that I've been here. The rains are coming apparently. I hope it doesn't, it's too beautiful! I'm really excited to bring ya'll up here... I've picked that phrase "ya'll" up since I've been out... Good to hear that Sporty Spice is still going good. People in Fortuna drive trucks, especially diesel trucks. They are EVERYWHERE. I like them a lot actually, although I would never buy one. BUT, I have grown to like the Toyota Tacoma's a lot... they're super nice! Anywho...

 

 It's really weird to think that I'm half way done with my mission... where did the last 12 months go? Was it fast or slow for you both? It's flown by for me... It's crazy to think that I could go home THIS year. Weird. Elder Gardner goes home in June... just 5 months away, and Elder Bacon goes home in July, only 6 months away. That really blows my mind! Elder Gardner wants me to get a place with him in Orem when I get home... so that's an idea. Elder Bacon lives in Provo, so I'll see him all the time too. Man, I love these guys! Gardner is still an AP, so I get to see him a lot. We're going on exchanges this week with the AP's (ZL's go with AP's) but I won't go with him, I'm going with Elder McBride, who I LOVE. McBride has been my ZL before, when i was in Fairfield, and last transfer up here. So, I know them both really well. I'm excited.
